Two teenage girls, 16-year-old Katie Embry and 17-year-old Becca Kotler , discuss a supposedly cursed videotape while home alone at Katie's house. Katie reveals that, seven days before, she went to a cabin at Shelter Mountain Inn with friends, where she viewed the video tape. The girls laugh it off, but after a series of strange occurrences in the next few minutes, involving a television in the house turning itself on, Katie mysteriously and horrifically dies while Becca watches, causing Becca to be institutionalized in a mental hospital. The film turns to Katie's 9-year-old cousin, Aidan, who is visibly affected by the death, and his mother, Rachel Keller, a journalist. After Katie's funeral, Rachel's sister Ruth Embry asks her to investigate Katie's death, which leads her to the cabin where Katie watched the tape. Rachel finds and watches the tape; the phone rings, and she hears a child's voice say "seven days". Rachel is most upset after the call. The next day she calls Noah, her former boyfriend and father of Aidan, who has media-related skills, to show him the video. He asks her to make a copy for further investigation, which she does, but later takes it home herself. To Rachel's horror, she discovers Aidan watching the copy a few days later.
We chose to look at a clip of this film as we had similar ideas to what is featured in the film, the camera work which is used in the ring is similar to how we used shots in the process of filming. The ring uses lots of zoom's and close up's of the characters face's to built upon the intensity of the fear. At the beginning of the film they have used an establishing shot from a high angle to show the house and the atmosphere, this sets the scene and establishes the area which surrounds the house. As it moves into the house the girls are sat on the bed this is taken from a medium shot to give full view of the characters, moves into a close up as they begin conversation, this is so the audience can see the details of their facial expressions. The character sat on the floor comes to sit up on the bed, they have used a pan around while she is doing this to establish the surroundings in the room. Match on action is used during their conversation with a close up of their faces to show the intensity again, this is also a reaction shot because of the subject of their conversation. Zoom out of the camera shows the surrounding of the room because of the atmosphere is tense between the two girls. The camera then changes angle to be put on a high because of the character who is on the bed being in power of the conversation. A zoom in on the clock is used to suggests their fear of what has been viewed in the movie. A track of the girls is used to show them moving down the stairs which then zooms in on the phone to signify it ringing. The girls are then put into a long shot as they walk towards this, this is used so that the audience understand the perspective but so they can also see all the rooms along the corridor so that they are waiting for something to appear. As they reach the phone a close up of their faces is used, the camera then zooms out into a medium shot to her show the her actions.
The first edit I have identified is a crosscut from the outside of the house to the bedroom where the girls are, this has been used to cut out time. They have used a cut to change location in the house this gives the film a jumping effect to make it seem scarey to the auidence, matches the genre of the film. Graphic editing is used throughout the film to keep the lighting the same because there isn't no indefinate change of location. Elliptical editing is also used to cut out time of the journey around the house. They use another crosscut of the girl from the bedroom to the boy in the classroom this establishes a different location and they speed of it, this it been done to look faster to make the change dramatic.
Sound in the film used it mostly diagetic due to it been dialogue. The scream is added in through editing so this is classed as non-diagetic.
In the first sequence of the opening most of the characters identified are women or young women. The two girls at the beginning of the clip are in their school uniform, white shirt, black brazer, black shirt and ankle shocks. This gives the audience an indication that their characters could be seen as gullibel.
The boy in the clip is also in his unifor, black trousers, tie, blazer and shoes. He is smartly dresses this is shows how their is something suspisous about him because of this age, this also gives understanding that he is young.
The Teacher ang the guidian of the boy are dressed in long trousers and shirts of dull colours. To estalish that they are working women.
